Extended Essay

Syllabus:

A subject will be chosen, with guidance from a tutor, on an aspect of the Welsh language, linguistics, history of literature, Welsh history, medieval or modern literature.

The student's chosen subject will be discussed with an appropriate tutor who is a specialist in that field and every student is expected to present a summary of some 300 words along with a relevant bibliography to the relevant tutor.

Students will receive detailed instruction on the bibliography, plan, content and presentation of the extended essay.

Students are expected to show the fruits of their research regularly and present a draft of the extended essay (chapter by chapter) before submitting the final version.

Learning Outcomes :

To enable students to gain an understanding of their chosen subject through research, analysis and writing a 10,000 word extended essay.

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

• express themselves clearly and concisely in a style that is appropriate to the text being discussed;
• research in detail and organize information effectively;
• write an extended essay of some 10,000 words of a rigorous academic standard; prepare a comprehensive bibliography on their chosen subjects and recognize all their sources in an academic and appropriate way.

• Present a rigorous argument
• Use bibliographies and plan detailed summaries
• Be familiar with concepts of information retrieval and the tenets of academic research
